When Confederate General Sterling Price marched 12,000 troops into what became known as the Battle of Westport, he had no idea the ground he was covering would someday be among the most-visited parts of modern day-Kansas City.

But those of us 156 years removed from the “Gettysburg of the West” can doubly enjoy retracing the steps of those who fought in the October 1864 skirmish by not only reliving history, but also by experiencing some of Kansas City’s most popular destination neighborhoods along the Battle of Westport driving tour.

Established in the 1970s, the 32-mile tour leads visitors through the streets of Westport and the historic Country Club Plaza to Jacob L. Loose Memorial Park, where much of the actual Battle of Westport took place. From there, tourists visit neighborhoods including Brookside and the Battle of Westport Visitors Center at Swope Park. The tour also includes a section of the Marlborough Heights and Red Bridge areas, and concludes at 96th Terrace and Wornall Road in South Kansas City.

Most visitors begin the route at Marker One in the historic Westport District of Kansas City, located at Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. This marker stands upon the site of Federal Gen. Samuel R. Curtis’s headquarters in the Harris House Hotel, and is now located in the heart of Westport, across the street from Kelly’s Westport Inn (the oldest structure still standing in Kansas City), and near several shops, bars and restaurants in this eclectic midtown neighborhood.

From Westport, the tour follows Broadway, past Mill Creek Park and the J.C. Nichols Fountain, into the Country Club Plaza which offers many opportunities for a quick shopping break, a bite to eat or a cool drink.

The trail follows majestic Ward Parkway before ascending the rugged bluffs of Sunset Hill, which rises up from Brush Creek toward what is today Loose Park. Originally the site of the Kansas City Country Club (from which the Country Club Plaza gets its name), the land was purchased by Loose, and his wife, Ella, donated the 80-acre tract to the people of Kansas City following his death in 1923.

The park today is home to markers depicting the respective positions of Union and Confederate troops during the battle, as well as a row of artillery at the south end of the park along 55th Street.

Traveling south from Loose Park, the tour comes to the John B. Wornall House, which was struck by artillery shells and used as a field hospital. Wornall, who owned slaves but did his best to maintain neutrality, was the victim of numerous raids and robberies by both pro-Union and pro-secessionist forces prior to and during the war, and at one point was nearly hanged from the balcony of his 1858 Greek Revivalist mansion by bushwhackers.

From Wornall House, the tour heads east through the heart of Brookside, a “suburban” neighborhood surrounding a central shopping district built in the 1910s and ‘20s, to Forest Hill Cemetery, site of Gen. Shelby’s Last Stand, where a Confederate monument now stands. Many of Shelby’s troops are buried here. From Forest Hill the tour comes to the Battle of Westport Visitor Center at the west entrance to Swope Park (6601 Swope Parkway).

The Visitors Center is open Thursday through Saturday, from 1 p.m.- 5 p.m., and is located a few minutes’ drive from the Kansas City Zoo.

“If you retrace the battle, the tour actually begins at the Battle of Westport Visitors Center at Swope Park and ends in Westport,” said Dan Smith, chairman of the Howard N. Monnett Battle of Westport Fund, “but many visitors prefer to begin in Westport and end at the Park where they can enjoy a picnic or a trip to the Kansas City Zoo.”

Smith and a group of volunteers are working to raise funds to preserve historic sites along the Battle of Westport Trail, as well as at Byram’s Ford on the Blue River, just north and east of Swope Park. The Monnett Battle of Westport Fund Inc., is a 501 ©(3) tax-exempt charitable corporation named in honor of the late Howard N. Monnett, a leading historian, charter member of the Civil War Round Table of Kansas City and author of the book Action Before Westport.

The Monnett Fund raised the funds to purchase and erect permanent signage and monument markers at 25 sites and had created the self-guided automobile tour in 1979.

For more information about events commemorating the Battle of Westport, contact the Westport Historical Society at westporthistorical@gmail.com or call 816–561-1821 or 913–648-0952.

The Battle of Westport is just one of many Civil War tours in Missouri. Other Missouri Civil War tours of note include: Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in Republic, near Springfield, and the Battle of Lexington. A collection of regional Civil War-related tour itineraries is also available online at www.WhereTheCivilWarBegan.com.

Celebrate “Staycation Months” in Chicago this June and July

This summer, the Chicago Greeter program invites locals to explore a new neighborhood or Chicago tradition with a Chicago Greeter. From June 1 – July 31, Chicagoans can celebrate “staycation months” by registering for a free, customized Greeter visit. Normally available only to out-of-town visitors, the Greeter service will be offered to Chicago residents exclusively during the months of June and July.

Chicago River, Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Greeter program is a free, informal tour service in which locals introduce guests to more than 40 special interest topics and 30 neighborhoods throughout Chicago. As volunteers, Chicago Greeters give two-to-four hour “insider orientations” to their favorite parts of Chicago—topics can range from hidden gem restaurants in Andersonville to public murals in Pilsen.

Visitors are matched with Greeters based on the individual’s interests, availability and language. Greeters personalize visits with their own experiences and specialties, taking guests across the city, demonstrating its walkability and the user-friendliness of its public transportation system. Visits are available to parties of six or fewer. Registration for June and July visits is open now at www.chicagogreeter.com; reservation requests must be made 7–10 days in advance.

“Exploring a new neighborhood with a Greeter is a great way for Chicagoans to jumpstart their summer,” said Dorothy Coyle, Director, Chicago Office of Tourism. “You might live in Rogers Park and have never visited Pullman—now is your chance! The Staycation Months give locals an opportunity to discover new treasures in their own backyard.”

In addition to the traditional Chicago Greeter service, residents can rediscover their city through one-hour walkabouts at the new Old Town InstaGreeter Outpost, opening May 29 at the Second City (1616 N. Wells Street), the Hyde Park InstaGreeter Outpost, located at the Hyde Park Art Center (5020 S. Cornell Avenue), and Millennium Park Greeter, based out of the Millennium Park Welcome Center (201 E. Randolph Street). All outposts operate Memorial Day through Columbus Day; hours vary by location.

“Staycation Months” and the neighborhood InstaGreeter Outposts are part of the Chicago Office of Tourism’s 2010 summer tourism campaign, Explore Chicago: Eat, Play, Love our Neighborhoods. From June through September, campaign highlights include Family Day Camps, Neighborhood Scavenger Hunts, outdoor festivals and other free or budget-friendly events throughout the city.

Since April 2002, Chicago Greeter has been a resource for both visitors and locals entertaining visiting family and friends. In September 2003, Chicago Greeter launched its InstaGreeter program, an “on-the-spot” greeter service offering visitors the opportunity to see downtown Chicago in an hour with a Greeter leading free walking visits of the Chicago Loop. Additional InstaGreeter locations are now offered in Old Town, Hyde Park, and Millennium Park.

There have been over 8,000 Greeter visits and 2,500 InstaGreeter visits to date, servicing visitors from more than 80 different countries. Chicago Greeter and InstaGreeter visits originate at the Chicago Cultural Center Visitor Information Center, 77 E. Randolph Street. More information about the Chicago Greeter program and InstaGreeter services can be found at www.ExploreChicago.org.

The Chicago Office of Tourism (@explorechicago) provides a seven-day-a-week Twitter Concierge Service offering advice and suggestions about the city. Visitor service representatives answer questions and provide information with a focus on free and discounted events and activities in neighborhoods throughout Chicago.

Visitors and Chicagoans planning to entertain out-of-town guests can receive Chicago brochures, reserve hotel accommodations and receive trip-planning assistance by calling toll-free 1.877.CHICAGO (1.877.244.2246), or visiting www.ExploreChicago.org. Brochures and information on Chicago’s events and activities are also available at the Visitor Information Centers. The centers are located at Chicago Water Works, 163 East Pearson Street at Michigan Avenue and the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 East Randolph Street. The TTY toll-free number for the hearing impaired is 1.866.710.0294.

Wisconsin’s tourism industry has a penchant for attracting national-level events, creating new attractions and expanding old favorites, and searching for ways to make the travel experience fresh and exciting year after year. And 2010 is no exception. Whether your ideal getaway is to be entertained, learn something new, get active or just reconnect with family and friends, you’ll find something new to experience in Wisconsin this year. So here’s a rundown of what’s coming in 2010.

Attractions and Exhibits

Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible: Ancient Artifacts, Timeless Treasures

The largest temporary exhibit ever produced by the Milwaukee Public Museum brings together archaeological objects and manuscripts to tell a story 2,000 years in the making. Witness actual Dead Sea Scrolls and other early biblical artifacts to learn how transmission of these early writings has shaped the beliefs of Judaism and Christianity and influenced aspects of Islam. This limited engagement runs Jan. 22–June 6 (888–700-9069; www.mpm.edu).

The Moving Wall

Vietnam Veterans and their families and supporters are invited to LZ Lambeau, a special welcome home celebration to be held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay on May 20–23. This touching event will include several days of concerts, reunions and exhibits, including The Moving Wall™, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The event kicks off with a motorcycle rally on May 21 starting in La Crosse and ending at the “landing zone” of Lambeau Field ( http://lzlambeau.org).

Stevens Point Sculpture Park

The 20-acre Stevens Point Sculpture Park, which will feature artwork from local, regional and national artists, celebrates its grand opening June 12. The park connects to the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5-mile hiking and biking trail that loops around the Stevens Point area through natural forests and wetlands. The park will build on the area’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors by hosting seasonal events and education programs year round (pointsculpturepark@hotmail.com; www.stevenspointsculpturepark.org).

Little Chute Windmill

The Little Chute Windmill is an authentic 1850s design from the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands where volunteer millers will operate the windmill and demonstrate for visitors the ancient process of grinding grain into flour. The groundbreaking is planned for spring with an anticipated opening in summer 2010. In addition, the Van Asten Visitor Center will feature exhibits on the history and legacy of Dutch settlement in the Fox River Valley and northeast Wisconsin (920–788-2629; www.littlechutewindmill.org).

Tourdot Winery

The newly-opened and family-owned Tourdot Winery in the Wisconsin Dells will be showcasing 10 wines made from California grapes. Additionally, visitors can tour the estate to see grapes maturing now that will be made into 2011’s wines. For those who prefer beer, Tourdot carries 25 different craft beers. Also new this year, there will be picnicking in the 36-acre forest that adjoins the vineyard (608–253-4400; www.tourdotwinery.com).

Key Ingredients: America By Food

The Wisconsin Humanities Council kicks off the decade with two programs that explore the human connection to our environment. Key Ingredients: America By Food, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, looks at how culture and traditions impact the foods Americans produce, prepare, preserve and present at the table. The exhibits, a selection of artifacts, photographs and illustrations, will make stops in two Wisconsin communities in 2010: Reedsburg (Oct. 20–Dec. 3, 2010) and Rhinelander (Dec. 10–Jan. 21, 2011). The exhibit will make four more stops in River Falls, Westfield, Osseo and Brodhead in 2011.

Making it Home Film Festival

Also new from the Wisconsin Humanities Council is a partnership with the communities of Baraboo, Dodgeville, Milwaukee and the Chequamegon Bay area to bring the Making it Home Film Festival this March and April. Each community will present a weekend of events and films that reflect their own unique sense of place. More information about both events is available through the Wisconsin Humanities Council (608–262-0706; www.wisconsinhumanities.org).

New and Noteworthy Events

Betty Boop Festival Wisconsin

If you’re a Betty Boop fan, don’t miss the official Betty Boop Festival Wisconsin to be held in Wisconsin Rapids on Aug. 6–8. The festival will mark the anniversary of Betty Boop’s animation debut on August 9, 1930, and honors Grim Natwick, a Wisconsin Rapids native and Betty’s original top animator at Fleischer Studios, for his lifelong achievements. The event will showcase an expanded Grim Natwick animation exhibit, scenic motorcycle tours, an animated film festival, visual art gallery and an animation art collectors show (bbfestivalwi@gmail.com).

92nd PGA Championship

The PGA Championship and its historic Wanamaker Trophy will return to Whistling Straits for the 92nd PGA Championship on Aug. 9–15. Be a part of history as the world’s premiere players once again test their skills on one of the most challenging venues in golf set along the shores of Lake Michigan. Tickets are currently on sale for this major championship featuring golf’s greatest. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets early as demand for the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits was unprecedented.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail one of its 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. The Crooked Road was selected for blending eco-tourism and small town charm with the Appalachian region’s musical heritage, providing visitors with a unique cultural experience that spans 300 miles across 19 towns. In the month of February, The Crooked Road will be participating in the first-ever public online voting contest for the 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations Fan Favorite.

For 10 years the National Trust for Historic Preservation has annually selected communities across America that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from those found at the typical vacation destination. From dynamic downtowns and stunning architecture to cultural diversity and a commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization, the selected destinations boast a richness of character and exude an authentic sense of place.

“The Crooked Road pays homage to a rich Appalachian heritage,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The trail weaves together unique historic districts that share a past steeped in a rare and uniquely American music culture.”

Celebrating and preserving the Appalachian region’s cultural heritage, The Crooked Road encourages visitors to experience authentic mountain music in the region where it was born. The trail highlights eight music venues, including the Ralph Stanley Museum & Traditional Music Center, Carter Family Fold, Norton Country Cabin, Bristol, the Rex Theater & Old Fiddler’s Convention and the Blue Ridge Music Center. The Floyd Country Store is home to the world-famous Friday Night Jamboree, a long-running music series featuring local Old Time, Bluegrass and Gospel music. Nineteen towns dot the 300-mile route and offer historic and cultural programs, artisan crafts, museums and outdoor recreational activities.

Other highlights include:

Along the trail, wayside kiosks provide information and FM radio broadcasts featuring musical excerpts and narration about the scenic attractions and cultural offerings

Often called the Grand Canyon of the South, Breaks Interstate Park is a 4,600-acre park that borders Kentucky and Virginia and features campsites, hiking, a lodge and spectacular views

Chateau Morrisette in Patrick County is a family-run winery featuring an award-winning chef, a jazz festival and popular wine tastings

“Farm to fork” cuisine can be enjoyed at The Harvest Table Restaurant in Meadowview, which celebrates local produce on menus that change weekly based on harvest

Downtown historic districts in Abingdon and Bristol offer eclectic shopping experiences

The title of Distinctive Destination is presented to cities and towns that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization. In each community, residents have taken forceful action to protect their town’s character and sense of place.

The Crooked Road joins Lexington, Charlottesville and Staunton as Virginia destinations to have received this honor.

Three notable milestones for Tennessee are:

The 75th birthday celebration of Elvis Presley that took place on January 7–10 at Graceland in Memphis.

The opening of Titanic Pigeon Forge, a 30,000-square-foot, ship-shaped structure that rests on 5.69 acres. It will hold 20 galleries with hundreds of artifacts from the Titanic. The galleries are set to open April 2010.

The 100th birthday of the Hermitage Hotel in downtown Nashville. The hotel began celebrating in September 2009. The Hermitage is the only five-diamond hotel in Tennessee and boasts the famous Capitol Grille, one of Tennessee’s finest dining experiences.

Here is a taste of what’s new in 2010 for Tennessee.

East Tennessee

America’s legendary Delta Queen, the last fully operational, overnight passenger steamboat in the country, is now docked in Chattanooga and functioning as a boutique hotel.

A new first-class exhibition opened at the East Tennessee History Center in Knoxville entitled “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee.” The exhibition tells the story of three centuries of life in the region, from the Cherokee to the 1982 World’s Fair. East Tennessee’s Historical Society had been preserving the region’s history for 175 years.

Middle Tennessee

Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. To kick off the celebration, Cheekwood will offer a special 50 cent admission charge for the entire month of January. “Nashville Memoir: Photographs by Greg Miller” and “New Direction: Video Artists Explore Southern Identity” will be among various exhibits on display at Cheekwood throughout the year.

Cumberland Caverns will celebrate as 2010 marks 200 years since its discovery. The caverns are open year-round for guided walking tours. The site is also known for Bluegrass Underground, a radio show taped 333 feet below ground level in the Volcano Room.

West Tennessee

International Rockabilly Hall of Fame Festival in Jackson reaches a 10th anniversary milestone in 2010.

The Memphis Zoo, named the No.1 zoo in America by TripAdvisor, recently added Teton Trek, a four-acre exhibit featuring grizzlies, timber wolves, elk and trumpeter swans.
