7 Best iPhone Transit Map Apps

Ever since I got an iPod Touch, I've been addicted to the slim little gadget. It literally never leaves my side (although my wife won't allow me to sleep with it on the pillow next to me. She draws the line there!) and is probably the most useful electronic gadget I've ever owned.

The iPhone is especially useful while traveling. It has built-in GPS, internet, access to Google maps, and an abundance of applications geared towards the traveler. I thought it would be useful to do a nice little roundup of useful travel applications for the iPhone, broken down into sensible categories.

I'll start with the seven best transit map applications for the iPhone.

Metro Paris Subway - If you've ever been a non-French speaking American abroad in France, you know that it can be a daunting task trying to communicate with Parisians and find your way around one of the world's greatest cities.

Paris has a wonderful Metro system that's a must for getting around, but it's not always easy to figure out what stop you need, where to change trains, etc. The Metro Paris Subway app is a must-have if you plan on traveling to Paris. It includes an official metro map, official map of the RER (regional express network), a detailed map of each line (Metro, RER, Tramway and SNCF Transilien), and official bus route maps.

It also includes schedules for each Metro line and precise locations of each station.

London Tube Subway - Published by the same company as the Metro Paris Subway application, the London Tube Subway app includes officially licensed subway maps. It has detailed maps of most lines in London and includes precise locations of each station.

London Bus - Complimenting the London Tube Subway application, the London Bus app has official up-to-date maps of the key bus routes in central London, the precise locations of the main bus stations, and more.

Tokyo Subway Route Map - You thought the Paris Metro was confusing? You should try getting around in Tokyo without a native speaking guide! Tokyo is an absolute maze. This guide should be a must-have for anyone traveling to Tokyo who doesn't speak and/or read Japanese.

This application includes a route list and route map of the Tokyo Subway (including Tokyo Metro and the Metropolitan Subway), a station list for each route, a transfer guide, and more.

iTrans NYC Subway - This app covers the MTA New York City subway system and features a licensed MTA map. It includes timetables, offline service advisories and walking directions.

Washington Metro - Includes a detailed map of all lines in Washington D.C. and precise locations of the stations. The trip planner tool allows you to find the best route, with estimated times!

iBart Live - Unlike the other transit map applications listed above, iBart Live uses the iPhone's 3G connection or wifi to gather live info about the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. It also includes station information and service advisories.
