Acer Aspire One netbook, a traveler’s friend

It started out as a new gadget. It has evolved into a  much loved accessory.

I wanted a netbook simply for the size. I debated it for months. I drove my husband nuts with my own debates over the pros and cons, both technical and physical. When I travel, it could fit in my tote bag.  The size would make it harder to see a full screen. When I am working in the kitchen, it wouldn’t take up  the whole counter. The keyboard is smaller, would it be too hard to type? When the kids have a project, we can work wherever we happen to be.  The kids might try to commandeer it from me. The list went on and on.  My husband got tired of me debating myself, and bought it for me. The novelty has worn off, but not the functionality.

I am now the happy owner of an ACER Aspire One netbook. I have had it for several months already, and find I use it a lot. It has a definite advantage over my old laptop, in its portability. It lived up to all my expectations in regards to its size, and then some. For me, the pros definitely outweighed the cons. The size and portability factor make up for any of the speed concerns. I don’t mind taking it anywhere. I just drop it in my tote, and off we go.

So far, I have been able to run the programs I use daily with no difficulty. My husband chose the extended battery, and I am glad. It lasts around 6 hours before needing recharged. It is a bit slower than my desktop, however, I am getting used to that. This is an ongoing joke in our house. If the computer isn’t moving at the speed of light, I get click happy. I just have to remember to be patient, not my strong point.

I mainly use the internet with it, and that works beautifully. Everything for wifi is built right in, I don’t have to plug in a wireless card like the laptop. This means fewer parts to carry around also, satisfying my desire to downsize my tote bag. Again, just toss the netbook in my bag, and I’m off. It doesn’t weigh much at all, which my shoulder likes a lot! I don’t even miss not having any of the disc drives. I simply plug in my memory card or flash drive when I need a file from my desktop or to load pictures off the camera. You know it is easy if I can do it!

I have only connected to the internet away from home at a few hotels, and had no trouble. I really haven’t done the restaurant wifi thing yet, although the kids automatically point out “wifi hotspots” to me. It sounds appealing, but when we are traveling, I don’t usually sit on the computer midday. I use it more in the evening when we have called it a day to update a blog or download pictures from the day. It fit perfectly on the airplane tray though, so that was pretty nice!

Overall,  I would recommend the Acer Aspire One. Whether you are travelling around the world or around town, it is easy to take along and fun to use!
