Living so close to the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan to be exact), I often take them for granted. Then along comes some­thing new that I hadn’t heard of before. Case in point: The Great Lakes Seaway Trail.

Great Lakes what?” Exactly. If you’ve never heard of it before, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail is a driving/boating byway that par­al­lels the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes in New York and Pennsylvania. The trail is a National Scenic Byway that includes includes Niagara Falls; 1000 Islands; 29 light­houses; War of 1812 farm and nature sites; lots of har­bors, world-class sport­fish­ing, bridges and fer­ries to and from Canada, and the Seaway Trail Discovery Center.

NYC & Company, the offi­cial mar­ket­ing, tourism and part­ner­ship orga­ni­za­tion for New York City, announced activ­i­ties sur­round­ing the 2009 New Year’s Eve fes­tiv­i­ties. The year-end cel­e­bra­tion brings hun­dreds of thou­sands of peo­ple to Times Square, one of the most famous gath­er­ing spots in the world. As vis­i­tors and res­i­dents watch the world-famous New Year’s Eve Ball descend from the flag­pole atop One Times Square at mid­night on the last day of the year, the eyes of the world are squarely on New York City.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island hold first public night tours September 24 and 25

To kick-off the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation’s cel­e­bra­tion of the national parks on September 26 — National Public Lands Day — the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island will for the first time, open to the pub­lic for a spe­cial evening tour and pro­gram event on September 24 and 25, 2009. As part of the fes­tiv­i­ties, atten­dees will expe­ri­ence a sneak pre­view of Ken Burns’s new doc­u­men­tary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea pre­mier­ing on PBS the fol­low­ing evening.
