Airline workers make LAX parking lot their home
I’ve done my fair share of traveling and have struck up conversations with pilots and other workers in many a midwestern airport over the years. Having spent many years driving a grueling 1 plus commute each way, day after day, I’ve often wondered how pilots and other airline workers handle commuting to airports, and where they live when they’re not in the skies.
Having worked near O’Hare airport for years, I can attest to the numbers of town homes, condo communities and apartment complexes near the airport that cater to the itinerant airport worker community. Let’s face it, if you’re spending days or weeks at a time on duty and you live any distance away, it’s probably easier to set up a temporary home close to your job than it is to endure a grueling commute.
Apparently, in Los Angeles, some pilots and workers have eschewed the condo/apartment rental in favor of living in a parking lot near LAX, according to this L.A. Times story. As one might guess, the economy has a lot to do with this.
Still, I’m not entirely sure I could put up with the noise and fumes in order to save the money. How about you? Have you ever temporarily lived somewhere to be close to your job?
