Irene-

Thanks for reading and good luck on your trip! I've been so caught up in other stuff that I haven't had time to finalize planning for this trip. Going to start working on that this week! I'm a notorious overpacker of clothes, so this will be a good challenge for me. I have a feeling I'll be doing laundry somewhere along the ride as well.

My husband and I are planning this trip the end of July 2010 and I will also be traveling on a 2006 Sportster 1200 and my husband on a 2003 Softail Standard. We have done some other trips together on his and my first long distance trip on my bike was two years ago to the Black Hills. Packing light is a must and we pretty much have it down to a master packing list that we use. We usually end up stopping mid trip and doing a little laundry so you only need to take half as much. Have a great time!

Dave-

My original plan was to camp but I was overruled! I'd love to know how your trip works out. Post a comment with a link to your blog so we can all follow along.

How do you and your friend like the BMWs? I've been thinking about picking up a dual sport as my next bike. My friend who owns the Victory just bought a 2006 Kawasaki KLR650 and took it trail riding last weekend. He's planning to do a trip through Alaska sometime next year I think.

Good tip on the bug spray, I was figuring they'd be pretty bad around June! Also the reason I'll most likely be wearing my full face helmet and not my half helmet. I think eating bugs would get old after the first day or so!

Ron,

Nice to hear there are other guys out there that are "on a budget"! Every trip I read about include overnights at 4-star hotels and steak and chardonay dinner every night.

My friend and I are taking the same trip starting May 15, 2010. He on a 1999 BMW K1200, and me on my 1998 BMW R1100 RT. We will be camping on the Lake every night and hoping to catch enough fish to feed ourselves, we'll see how that goes.

We are blogging our ride too so maybe we can keep up with one another. By the way, don't forget the bug spray. I hear the Mosquitos have been known to carry away small dogs and children.

Have fun

That sounds like a great trip Matt! It's nice to hear from someone else who's done serious miles on a Sporty. I'm really looking forward to the trip.

Thanks for the packing light advice. I'm definitely going to pare everything down to the basics, though I'll have a laptop with me so I can blog during the trip.

Sounds like a great trip. I plan to do this some day on my 1985 Sportster. I have made several long trips on my bike including riding to Daytona, Sturgis and Laconia for bike week. I put around 3000 miles on my bike in 12 days after leaving bike week in Laconia New Hampshire I continued on to Maine and rode most of the coast up to New Brunswick Canada and then to Quebec before returning to Southwest Michigan. What I have learned from my trips is to pack light! Rain gear, tools and a map that should about do it. Yes of course you need a few clothes but unless you are going out for nice meals every night you don’t need much. A light bike is much more fun to ride than an overloaded one, enjoy the freedom from your everyday life and see what you can live without. Have a safe trip.
