US Airways to Increase Baggage Fees
While cheap airfare has been in abundance this summer, airline baggage fees continue to increase, making it more expensive to fly. US Airways is the latest to raise their checked baggage fees. On Wednesday, August 26, 2009, US Airways announced the increase. The new fees are $20 for the first checked bag and $30 for the second checked bag. The brings US Airways checked baggage fees up to the same amounts put into place by American Airlines earlier this summer.
In addition, US Airways announced it will also match a $50 second checked bag fee on its trans-Atlantic flights, a change recently introduced by some competitors. The new trans-Atlantic second bag fee will apply to all European destinations served by the airline.
The fee changes will become effective on tickets purchased starting Wednesday, August 26 for travel on or after October 7, 2009.
When comparing flights, be sure to factor in the costs for checked baggage, especially for trans-Atlantic flights, since travelers are more likely to have a need to check luggage. Many flight comparison websites still do not factor in baggage fees, so the prices you see may not be the prices you'll end up paying.
